Congresswoman Marcia L. Fudge Releases Statement in Response to

Secretary Betsy DeVos’ Proposed Rules on Sexual Misconduct on College Campuses

WASHINGTON – Congresswoman Marcia L. Fudge (OH-11) released the following statement in response to Secretary of Education Betsy DeVos’ proposed policy changes determining how the nation’s colleges and universities handle sexual assault investigations.

“Between arming teachers with guns and limiting the definition of sexual harassment on college campuses, it is clear Secretary DeVos does not ever intend to make the safety of students a priority.  She is clearly out of touch with the needs of students inside and outside of the classroom, which she has proven time and time again.  This is nothing more than a veiled attempt to do what this administration does – protect the rich, protect institutions and make life difficult for hard-working Americans.

“To allow colleges and universities to limit their sexual assault investigations to incidents occurring on campus is reckless and reprehensible.  These changes will shield the accused and the universities they attend.  The Secretary should be held accountable for protecting all of our students, whether living on or off campus.  It is outrageous to protect perpetrators rather than those harmed or injured.  In the age of the #MeToo movement, Secretary DeVos has turned back the clock.”
