Congresswoman Marcia L. Fudge Releases Statement Following

Supreme Court Decision in Janus Labor Union Case

WASHINGTON-Congresswoman Marcia L. Fudge (OH-11) released the following statement in response to the Supreme Court’s 5-4 decision in Janus v. AFSCME, finding that public sector unions cannot collect “fair share fees” for the services they are required to provide to all workers.

“I am deeply disappointed in today’s Supreme Court decision to overturn Janus v. AFSCME.  This is yet another blow to working Americans.  The Supreme Court failed to protect the fundamental right of workers to form a union and collectively bargain.  The Justices overturned decades of law to undermine the freedom of teachers, police officers, firefighters, and all public service workers to fight for decent pay and a fair workplace.

“Unions are a vital part of our nation and are critical to rebuilding the middle class.  Decades ago, Congress protected the right of workers to join together and bargain for better wages, regular work hours, overtime pay, and improved safety conditions.  Republicans have been systematically attacking unions and workers’ rights for decades.  It is no coincidence that a dramatic rise in income inequality coincides with a nation-wide campaign against unionization.  Today, conservatives on the Supreme Court ignored law and history to uphold a partisan agenda.”
