Congresswoman Marcia L. Fudge on the Reunification of Immigrant Children Separated from their Families at the Border

Congresswoman Marcia L. Fudge on the Reunification of

Immigrant Children Separated from their Families at the Border

WASHINGTON – Congresswoman Marcia L. Fudge (OH-11) released the following statement regarding the grossly inadequate reunification efforts at the border for families separated prior to the President’s executive order.

“It is clear that when they began enforcing their zero-tolerance policy, this administration had no plan or any idea how to move forward humanely.  They clearly never considered reuniting thousands of immigrant children with their families.  The initial treatment of families crossing our borders is deplorable and creates a black hole of uncertainty for thousands of families.

“The Department of Homeland Security issued a ‘fact sheet’ that set forth a process that could have helped reunify the children with their families.  However, recent events prove that neither DHS nor Health and Human Services officials have the resources or the capacity to overcome their failure to correctly track the locations of children and parents.  Help lines are inactive, and immigration lawyers have to overcome so many obstacles when trying to help their clients.  Once again, America’s values are undercut by inhumane policy and haphazard planning by this administration.”
