Rep. Fudge Statement on the VRA 54th Anniversary

Congresswoman Marcia L. Fudge Statement on the 54thAnniversary of the Voting Rights Act of 1965

WASHINGTON – Congresswoman Marcia L. Fudge (OH-11) released the following statement commemorating the 54th anniversary of the Voting Rights Act of 1965:

“The signing of the Voting Rights Act of 1965 was a watershed moment in our nation’s history,” said Rep. Fudge.  “This key legislation lifted restrictions preventing African Americans from voting in federal, state and local elections, and gave a sense of hope to the quarter of a million new African American voters at the time.  Today, we are reminded of the sacrifices made and blood shed by brave men and women who fought, and continue to fight, for our right to vote.  Let us all recommit ourselves to exercising our civil rights, and demanding every American has access to the ballot box.  We have a duty to hold America accountable and keep to its promise of free and unfettered voting rights for all citizens.”
