Congresswoman Marcia L. Fudge Statement on Ohio Drug Epidemic

WARRENSVILLE HEIGHTS, OH – Congresswoman Marcia L. Fudge (OH-11) released the following statement regarding the recent spike in deaths due to heroin use and the spread of Fentanyl-laced heroin and Carfentanil, in Northeast Ohio:

“We have lost more than 400 lives in Cuyahoga and Summit Counties in 2016, and the number continues to rise. No single measure is going to solve this growing epidemic. Our state needs resources – funding to help increase access to treatment, training to help reform the way we treat suffering Ohioans, and a concrete plan to get excess prescription and illegal drugs off our streets.  Talking about the situation is not enough. Together, we must act.  We cannot lose another life.”

Congresswoman Fudge is committed to addressing the opioid and heroin epidemic. In April 2015, she introduced H.R. 1988, The Breaking Addiction Act, to allow States to apply for waivers to increase the number of patients that can be served via Medicaid. The Congresswoman also co-introduced H.R.4076, The TREAT Act, with Congressman Mike Turner (OH-10) and Congresswoman Niki Tsongas (MA-3), to expand access to substance abuse treatment in prisons.
