Columbus- Lieutenant Governor Lee Fisher today announced that 17 cities, 12 counties, and 21 regions in Ohio will receive more than $83 million of Ohio Neighborhood Stabilization Program funds. The award recipients may use these federal funds to improve neighborhoods by purchasing and redeveloping abandoned and foreclosed properties, establishing land banks, and demolishing blighted structures.
The funds, administered by the Ohio Department of Development’s Community Development Division, were awarded based on foreclosures, subprime loans, defaults, delinquencies, and vacancy rates, with the areas of greatest need receiving funding. Regions will be required to select a lead entity to administer the program locally.
“There are no better or wiser strategic investments than those made at the places where our strongest physical and human capital assets intersect,” said Lt. Governor Fisher, who also serves as Director of the Ohio Department of Development. “The Neighborhood Stabilization Program awards are examples of these investments and we are extremely pleased to offer these funds that will help stabilize and strengthen our neighborhoods across the state.”
In addition, the Ohio Department of Development allocated approximately $29.2 million of Ohio Neighborhood Stabilization Program funds to an Affordable Rental Housing Initiative. The initiative will encourage non-profit organizations and public housing authorities to redevelop demolished, foreclosed, or vacant structures into affordable rental housing serving households with incomes at or below 50 percent of the area median income.
