REP. FUDGE REINTRODUCES STJ FIRE PREVENTION ACT October 25, 2011
WASHINGTON, DC--Congresswoman Marcia L Fudge (OH-11),today, reintroduced the Stephanie Tubbs Jones Fire Prevention Act. The legislation, supported by 14 organizations, would authorize funds to provide competitive matching grants to universities and colleges to install sprinklers, fire alarms, and other fire prevention mechanisms in student housing and dormitories. It reserves at least 10 percent of the funds for Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) and other minority-serving institutions and at least 10 percent of the funds for fraternities and sororities. This legislation was first introduced to the House of Representative by the late Congresswoman Tubbs Jones of Cleveland in 2009. "Taking precautionary measures to ensure the safety of our young people in colleges and universities should be a high priority. My hope is that this legislation will allow us to prevent unnecessary deaths from faulty fire safety equipment, and reduce the cost of damages. Our students deserve a safe place to live and study," said Congresswoman Fudge. Supporting Organizations:
