CONGRESSWOMAN FUDGE APPLAUDS FUNDING FOR WORKFORCE DEVELOPMENT IN OHIO'S EMERGING INDUSTRIES
July 20, 2010

WASHINGTON, D.C. – By passing the SECTORS ACT, the US House of Representatives moves towards program funding to train Americans for jobs of the future. The Act, unanimously approved Monday night, provides eligible entities competitive one year planning grants of up to $250,000 and three year implementation grants of up to $2.5 million.
SECTORS also reinforces Congresswoman Marcia L. Fudge's (D-OH) amendment to the Student Aid and Fiscal Responsibility Act of 2010. That amendment, now law, was sponsored by Congresswoman Fudge and SECTORS' sponsor Congressman Dave Loebsack (D-IA). It encouraged collaboration between colleges, universities and industry, organized labor, and workforce boards, in an effort to develop regional and industry specific training programs.
Congresswoman Fudge commented that "Ohio is looking toward the future and investing in the jobs of tomorrow, instead of those of yesterday. Jobs in clean energy, medicine, and bio-technology will help us become increasingly strong economically. Fortunately, SECTORS will help us achieve that goal."
The Act has significance to Ohio, with Senator Sherrod Brown authoring the Act in 2008 and Congressional co-sponsors including Congresswomen Fudge, Betty Sutton (OH-13), Congressmen Steve Austria (OH-7), Tim Ryan (OH-17), and Zack Space (OH-18).
