HOUSE PASSES FUDGE RESOLUTION TO INCREASE STUDENT INVOLVEMENT IN STEM PROGRAMS, SUPPORT NATIONAL LAB DAY
May 5, 2010
WASHINGTON, DC— Representative Marcia L. Fudge (OH-11) continued advocating for greater investment and involvement in science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) education by introducing today’s resolution, which passed by a vote of 378-2.
The measure encourages collaborations between educators and STEM professionals in supporting hands-on laboratory experiences for students, a central goal of National Lab Day.
Rep. Fudge cited striking statistics by noting that “In 2006 only 4.5% of students received undergraduate degrees in engineering as opposed to 33% in China. If this country is to continue leading the information economy, we must close this gap.”
Echoing President Obama’s call in his ‘Educate to Innovate Campaign,’ the resolution also aims to increase STEM literacy, to expand America’s leadership in STEM fields, and to expand STEM education and career opportunities for underrepresented groups, including minorities, women and girls.
