In recognition of May as Jewish American Heritage month, Congresswoman Marcia L. Fudge (OH-11) invites the people of Northeast Ohio and throughout the country to join her in celebrating the heritage and invaluable contribution of Jewish Americans.
"I am proud that the 11th District is home to a vibrant Jewish American community. It is the largest Jewish American community in the state of Ohio", stated Rep. Fudge.
The Jewish community has enriched every facet of American life including the arts, medicine, business, entertainment, sports and much more said Rep. Fudge. "Whether it's wearing a pair of jeans which were originally designed by Levi Strauss, or reading Dr. Seuss' books to children which were written by Theodor Geisel, we owe much to the contributions made by Jewish Americans." The "Man of Steel - Superman" was created by two Jewish American Clevelanders, Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster, in 1930.
Congresswoman Fudge also notes that Jewish Americans continue "tikkun olam", a phrase that means "to repair the world", through good deeds and service. By honoring these and other traditions, they set a positive example for all Americans. "Many of Cleveland's centers of excellence like its colleges, universities, hospitals and cultural institutions are made stronger through the generous support of the local Jewish community", stated Rep. Fudge.
Congresswoman Fudge encourages all residents to join her in celebrating the Jewish American contribution to our greater community and their cultural identity during this Heritage Month by participating in appropriately scheduled programs, activities and ceremonies.
