Rep. Fudge Addresses Imperial Women Murders with Congressional Resolution -- WKYC
January 6, 2010
WARRENSVILLE HEIGHTS -- The tragedy of 11 women murdered on Imperial Avenue will be heard in the halls of Congress.
Tuesday night representatives from 15 separate victims' groups including the "Imperial Women" organization went before 11th District Congresswoman Marcia Fudge.
Fudge listened to presentations from each of the victim advocate groups.
The congresswoman is authoring a resolution she hopes will change the way victims of violent crimes are handled by those charged with protecting them.
"We're tired of being treated as second class citizens. The law protects us but no one is following the law and we don't mean not following the letter of the law but the spirit of the law. The resolution is talking about the need to enforce the laws and to sensitize people that enforce the laws," Fudge said.
The group "Imperial Women" staged several walks and rallies at the home of suspected serial killer Anthony Sowell.
The organization says if police properly investigated a rape complaint against Sowell in 2008, 6 of the 11 victims would still be alive.
