REPRESENTATIVE FUDGE INTRODUCES NATIONAL CHILDHOOD OBESITY AWARENESS MONTH
December 15, 2009

WASHINGTON, DC - Representative Marcia L. Fudge (OH-11) will announce her resolution to designate September as National Childhood Obesity Awareness Month with youth from the London's Bridge Foundation, an organization founded by Washington Redskins player London Fletcher. Raising awareness of children's health needs is one tenet of Rep. Fudge's comprehensive plan to improve the health of American children and, thus, reduce health care costs.

National Childhood Obesity Awareness Month represents Rep. Fudge's long term commitment to aggressively reducing childhood obesity, increasing physical activity among youth, promoting healthy eating habits, and encouraging youth to complete routine preventive medical screenings.

If current obesity rates continue to rise, by 2035 there will be more than 100,000 additional cases of coronary heart disease attributable to obesity. Obese children cost the health care system roughly three times more than the average child.

The National Football League (NFL) and the NFL Players Association will join Rep. Fudge in this announcement. Those entities are two of the 46 national organizations supporting Rep. Fudge's call for childhood wellness.

London’s Bridge Foundation, founded in 2003, is an Ohio-based non-profit corporation.  The Foundation addresses inequities facing underprivileged and underrepresented children through mentorships and charitable giving programs.

The media is welcome to attend.

* Rep. Fudge will hold a press availability immediately following the program.*
