Washington, DC – Yesterday, Representative Marcia L. Fudge (OH-11) voted for the Fire Grants Reauthorization Act (H.R. 3791), which will provide local firefighters the necessary resources to prevent and fight fires. Many local governments are forced to cut basic services due to budget shortfalls. In response, the Act invests in vital firefighter assistance programs that allow local fire departments to provide training, purchase equipment and vehicles, and hire personnel.

“Our firefighters are courageous public servants who deserve the best equipment and training possible. In the face of shrinking local budgets, we must take every opportunity to support their work and keep them safe," said Rep. Fudge. “I’m proud to vote for this vital legislation which will keep our families safe and protect our firefighters.”

The bipartisan legislation authorizes a total of $2.2 billion a year in grants for local municipalities to upgrade crucial equipment and maintain personnel. It also makes it easier for local fire departments to access these funds by lowering matching requirements.

Since the 9/11 terrorist attacks, fire departments and first responders across the country have taken on additional responsibilities toward possible terrorist attacks. This legislation will give fire departments the critical resources needed to address these threats.

The bill has the support of the International Association of Fire Chiefs, the International Association of Fire Fighters, the National Volunteer Fire Council, the National Fire Protection Association, and the Congressional Fire Services Institute.
