Congresswoman Marcia L. Fudge Votes Against the Republican Budget
October 26, 2017

WASHINGTON – Today, Congresswoman Marcia L. Fudge (OH-11) released the following statement regarding her vote against the Republican Budget, Senate Amendment to H.Con.Res. 71, which paves the way for the Ryan-McConnell billionaires-first tax plan, increases the deficit by $1.5 trillion, and devastates vital programs Ohio families depend on:

“Today, Congressional Republicans made their priorities clear. Republicans chose tax cuts for the wealthy over responsible budgeting and the American people. This budget is nothing more than a gimmick designed to allow Republicans to fast-track tax cuts, all while ballooning the deficit and demanding trillions of dollars in cuts to vital programs such as Medicare, Medicaid, Social Security, and public education.

“Eighty percent of the benefit from the GOP tax plan goes to the top 1 percent of American earners, while 45% of hardworking families with children will see a tax increase under the current plan. According to the Tax Policy Center, U.S. households with average earnings of more than $733,000 per year were in the top 1% of earners.

“Show me a party’s budget and I will show you their values. We have seen the Republicans' values today. This budget is immoral. Today’s vote did not better America; it lays the groundwork for destroying American families in favor of a select few.

“It is time to cast aside these draconian cuts and windfalls for the wealthiest Americans and focus on the needs of our working families.”
