Congresswoman Marcia L. Fudge Highlights New Report: 833,000 Hard-Working Ohio Families Face Higher Taxes Under GOP's Billionaires-First Tax Giveaway
October 25, 2017

WASHINGTON – Today, Congresswoman Marcia L. Fudge (OH-11) highlighted a new report detailing the deep damage the Ryan-McConnell tax framework would inflict on middle class families across Ohio.  While 80 percent of the tax benefits in the GOP plan go to the wealthiest 1 percent, 833,000 hard-working Ohio families would pay higher taxes.

“The Republican plan is a disaster for Ohio seniors and families. The deficit will increase by trillions and hard-working middle class Americans will suffer in order to provide a massive tax break for millionaires and billionaires,” said Congresswoman Fudge. “As a nation, we should remain focused on investing in our children, strengthening the middle class, and protecting vital programs our seniors and veterans rely on - not robbing from our future.”

The state-by-state report finds that under the Ryan-McConnell framework:

  • 833,000 Ohio households, or 14.9 percent of state households, will pay higher taxes;

  • The average nationwide tax increase for families earning up to $86,100 would be $794;

  • 26% of tax filers, or 1.5 million Ohio households, will lose their State and Local Tax Deduction, worth an average deduction of $10,444;

  • The mortgage interest payments deduction, claimed by 1.1 million Ohioans would become useless for most families unless their home was worth more than $801,000 – more than six times the median home value of $129,300 in Ohio.

The report was compiled by the Senate Democratic Policy and Communications Committee with calculations based on more than 5.5 million tax returns filed by Ohioans with the IRS in 2015.
