Congresswoman Marcia L. Fudge Statement on Senate Hearing for Judicial and Assistant Attorney General for Civil Rights Nominees
September 5, 2017

WARRENSVILLE HEIGHTS, OH – Today, Congresswoman Marcia L. Fudge (OH-11) released the following statement regarding the scheduled single, combined Senate hearing on four Federal judicial nominees and the nominee for Assistant Attorney General for Civil Rights.

“The Senate has a constitutional obligation to fully vet nominees to the Federal bench and Federal agencies before confirming them.  The Senate Judiciary Committee’s decision to hold a single, combined hearing on two Federal Appeals Court nominees, two District Court nominees and the nominee for Assistant Attorney General for Civil Rights is an abdication of that responsibility.

“Our federal judges comprise an independent, co-equal branch of government.  Once confirmed, they have lifetime appointments and can change the course of judicial history for generations to come.  The American people deserve a full review of each nominee that cannot be accomplished in a crowded hearing for so many nominees.

“It is no secret that our civil rights have been under constant attack since the new Administration took office.  The position of Assistant AG for Civil Rights helps enforce those rights under the law.  The American people must be assured that the nominee understands that role and the rights to be protected.

“One hearing, one day is inadequate to determine the qualifications and fitness of all of these nominees.  The American people deserve to know the background and belief system of those who would serve and protect them.  The Senate must act as a check on the Executive it was designed to be, and hold full hearings on each of the five.“
