Congresswoman Marcia L. Fudge Introduces Bill to Ensure Clean Drinking Water in Schools September 23, 2016
WASHINGTON, D.C. – Yesterday, Congresswoman Marcia L. Fudge (OH-11) introduced H.R. 6143, legislation to improve the quality of drinking water in our nation’s schools. The Congresswoman’s bill is part of a larger package to amend The Safe Drinking Water Act of 1996 – the first major update in 20 years. “Schools should be a safe place for our children, not where they can be exposed to harmful chemicals like lead. Studies show lead has long-lasting effects on a child’s development, ability to learn, and focus,” said Congresswoman Fudge. “The bill directs the Environmental Protection Agency to revise its guidance consistent with current best practices to help school officials identify and reduce lead in drinking water. Every child deserves the opportunity to realize his/her full potential, and ensuring drinking water is clean while in school will help all children reach this goal.” The comprehensive package was introduced by Congressmen Frank Pallone (NJ-6) and Paul Tonko (NY-20). It is comprised of legislation and input from several House Democrats including Reps. Brendan Boyle (PA-13), G.K. Butterfield (NC-1), Lois Capps (CA-24), Tony Cardenas (CA-29), Diana DeGette (CO-1), John Garamendi (CA-3), Marcy Kaptur (OH-9), Dan Kildee (MI-5), Brenda Lawrence (MI-14), Jerry McNerney (CA-9), Bobby Rush (IL-5), Jan Schakowsky (IL-9), Jackie Speier (CA-14), and Peter Welch (VT-At-Large). “The Safe Drinking Water Act has not been updated for 20 years, which has put our drinking water at risk,” Congressman Pallone said. “The crisis in Flint has highlighted the need for action, but water systems nationwide are in dire need of dramatic improvements, including many in my home state of New Jersey. This comprehensive legislation provides the tools and resources that state and local governments need to ensure the public is provided with clean, safe drinking water. I commend the thoughtful work of so many of my Democratic colleagues in helping to craft this comprehensive bill.” As Ranking Member of the Subcommittee on Early Childhood, Elementary and Secondary Education, Congresswoman Fudge is committed to improving the overall health and education of our nation’s children.
