Congresswoman Marcia L. Fudge Announces $800,000 in EPA Grants for Brownfield Cleanup

WARRENSVILLE HEIGHTS, OH - Congresswoman Marcia L. Fudge (OH-11) released the following statement after the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) announced new Brownfields Assessment grants to the Cuyahoga County Land Reutilization Corporation, Northeast Ohio Regional Sewer District, and the Ohio Environmental Protection Agency:

"I thank the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency for its continued efforts to revitalize our region and remove harmful health hazards.  Contaminated properties threaten our public health and are a major obstacle to economic development.   These grants will improve public safety and bring new hope, investment, and vitality for Ohio’s communities.”

The EPA awarded a total of $55.2 million in grants to 131 communities nationwide. With these funds, the EPA strives to expand the ability of communities to recycle vacant and abandoned properties for new, productive reuses. Click here to learn more.

Cuyahoga County Land Reutilization Corporation  $200,000(2)                                              

Community-wide hazardous substances and petroleum grant funds will be used to conduct 16 Phase I and nine Phase II environmental site assessments. Grant funds also will be used to prepare two cleanup plans.

Northeast Ohio Regional Sewer District $200,000 Hazardous substances grant funds will be used to clean up the Cooper Property at 6207-6319 Kinsman Road, 6400-6420 and 6401 Grand Avenue, and 2697 and 2700-2721 East 64th Place in Cleveland. The site has had numerous uses since 1892, including residential dwellings, a lumber yard, building material supply yard, truck repair facility, and scrap yard. It is contaminated with metals, PCBs, and polynuclear aromatic hydrocarbons.
Ohio Environmental Protection Agency $200,000* Community-wide petroleum grant funds will be used to conduct up to five Phase I and up to nine Phase II environmental site assessments. Grant funds also will be used to prepare two cleanup plans and support community outreach activities.  Focus areas for assessments are the Cities of Cincinnati, Cleveland, and Toledo.
