Congresswoman Marcia L. Fudge Statement on the House Passage of the Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA)
December 2, 2015

WASHINGTON, DC – Today, Congresswoman Marcia L. Fudge (OH-11) released the following statement after the House passed the Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA) to reauthorize the Elementary and Secondary Education Act (ESEA):

“I thank my House colleagues for finally coming together to reauthorize the Elementary and Secondary Education Act (ESEA).  While no bill is perfect, the bipartisan Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA) addresses many of our nation’s most pressing public education issues.

“The bill protects Title I funding, ensures equitable allocation of resources to schools, recognizes the importance of after-school education, and maintains subgroup disaggregation of data for reporting.  The ESSA also gives states and local school districts more flexibility, while preserving the federal role in education and ensuring that states and districts honor the civil rights legacy of ESEA.

“Throughout this process, I have emphasized the final ESEA reauthorization must provide equal opportunities for all children regardless of race, ethnicity, income, language, or disability.  I believe the Every Student Succeeds Act achieves this goal by striking a balance in the best interest of all our nation’s students.  I urge the Senate to take swift action and pass the ESSA.”

Congresswoman Fudge was appointed to the conference committee for the reauthorization of the ESEA on November 17.  The Congresswoman is Ranking Member of the Early Childhood, Elementary, and Secondary Education Subcommittee of the U.S. House Committee on Education and the Workforce.
