Congresswoman Marcia Fudge Calls for Good Stewardship and Full Compliance of Federal Charter School Program (CSP)
October 5, 2015

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Congresswoman Marcia L. Fudge (OH-11), Ranking Member of the Early Childhood, Elementary, and Secondary Education Subcommittee of the U.S. House Committee on Education and the Workforce, has sent letters to U.S. Department of Education Secretary Arne Duncan and Ohio Governor John Kasich regarding a recent $71 million Charter School Program (CSP) State Educational Agency grant awarded to the state of Ohio.

Citing recent negative incidents within Ohio’s charter school system, Congresswoman Fudge expressed concern about the late September grant announcement.  “As a result of its lack of transparency and meaningful oversight, Ohio has failed many of our state’s charter school students,” Congresswoman Fudge wrote.  “That cannot continue.”

In the letters, Congresswoman Fudge urged Governor Kasich to execute good stewardship in the use of federal dollars and asked Secretary Duncan to keep her informed of Ohio’s compliant use of CSP funds.

“I have supported the federal Charter School Program,” Congresswoman Fudge continued.  “But [I also] have concerns about the allocation, use, and monitoring of federal funds in Ohio … Let’s work together to ensure children in the state of Ohio are benefitting from these funds.”
