WHAT: Congresswoman Marcia L. Fudge (OH-11) will participate in a news conference today with Case Western Reserve University (CWRU) School of Medicine to present original, groundbreaking colon cancer research. The School of Medicine’s pioneering cancer research is made possible with a federal research grant to establish a Specialized Program of Research Excellence in Gastrointestinal Cancers at Case Comprehensive Cancer Center. WHO: Congresswoman Marcia L. Fudge and Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine Dean Pamela B. Davis, MD, PhD WHEN: 10:15am; Monday, July 20, 2015 WHERE: Ballroom B, Tinkham Veale University Center at Case Western Reserve University, 11038 Bellflower Rd. WHY: African Americans have a 30 percent increased rate of developing colon cancer and 50 percent increased rate of dying from colon cancer, higher than that of any racial and ethnic group in the United States. Similar increases in African-Americans are seen for breast and other cancers as well. This meeting will showcase how CWRU School of Medicine’s life-saving genetic research is contributing to efforts to reduce colorectal, breast and other cancers by making new discoveries about the causes of cancer in African Americans and by increasing awareness about the importance of prevention, early detection and cancer treatment tools for the minority community. ### |
