Congresswoman Fudge’s Statement on Immigration Legislation that Ignored American Principles

Washington, DC- Congresswoman Marcia L. Fudge (OH-11) released the following statement today after voting no on H.R. 5272, a bill to cut funding for the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) policy, ban creation of a new deferred action program, and eliminate work permits for youth brought to and raised in the United States. Congresswoman Fudge also voted no on H.R. 5230, which failed to provide adequate funding for humanitarian assistance and border security in response to the crisis of unaccompanied youth fleeing Central America.

“Once again, House Republicans have wasted taxpayers’ time and money in order to save face. They proposed two shameful pieces of legislation without any hearing, markup or Democratic input. Neither H.R. 5272 nor H.R. 5230 will make it past the Senate due to lack of substance and common sense reform.”

“The House Majority would prefer to hastily end DACA and heartlessly deport DREAMers rather than be compassionate to people who have fled their countries looking for a safe place to call home. H.R. 5272 and H.R. 5230 fail to address the priorities of the American people and should not have even been considered in the House. It is time the House Leadership act rationally and consider H.R. 15, a bipartisan bill which was passed by the Senate a year ago, to fix our broken immigration system.”
