June 13, 2014

WARRENSVILLE HEIGHTS, OH - Congresswoman Marcia L. Fudge (OH-11) released the following statement on the passing Thursday of Cleveland born actress, poet, journalist and civil rights activist Ruby Dee at the age of 91:

“From the Broadway stage to the silver screen to her role emceeing the 1963 March on Washington, Ruby Dee was a much admired, larger than life presence who inspired generations of Americans.   Ms. Dee blazed a trail as a commanding voice for social justice and civil rights.  My district takes pride in knowing Ms. Dee, who spent her early childhood in Cleveland,  broke ground as an African American performer and paved  the way for future generations of actors and entertainers,” said Congresswoman Fudge.

“Her commitment to the well-being of others and to building a fair and just society was matched by her considerable talents as an award winning actress, entertainer, poet and journalist.  My thoughts and prayers are with her family. Ruby Dee will be missed, but her many contributions on stage and screen, and as an iconic voice of the civil rights movement, ensure she will never be forgotten.”
