Washington, DC – Congresswoman Marcia L. Fudge (OH-11) released the following statement today on the passing of American Poet Laureate, author and artist, Maya Angelou, at the age of 86: “Dr. Maya Angelou inspired not only a nation but the world with her magnificent talent to express the wonders of life in spoken word. I had the honor of meeting her on many occasions and was struck by her commanding presence and grace. As an author and poet, Dr. Angelou had a unique gift to transform the human experience into stirring, unforgettable verse and prose. As an icon for civil and human rights, social and economic justice, Dr. Angelou used the power of her words to improve the lives of all people. She was an artist through and through who saw profound lessons and beauty in all things and shared her wisdom to inspire the world. While we mourn the passing of a towering literary figure, we also celebrate a great American who lived life fully and inspired millions. May her family take comfort in knowing her work belongs to all the ages. As Ms. Angelou said, ‘Nothing can dim the light which shines from within.’ Her light shines on.”
