Congresswoman Fudge Denounces Limited Early Voting Hours Announced by Ohio Secretary of State Jon Husted
January 17, 2014

Congresswoman Marcia L. Fudge (OH-11) released the following statement today regarding the In-Person Absentee Voting Hours (known as early voting hours) set by Ohio Secretary of State Jon Husted for the May 6, 2014 primary election:

“Once again, the right of all qualified Ohioans to vote is being hindered by Secretary Husted.  By eliminating evening hours, and providing only one weekend opportunity to vote, the new schedule has a disproportionate negative impact on specific voting populations such as students, the elderly, urban residents and communities of color,” said Congresswoman Fudge.

“There are those who describe the statewide imposition of uniform hours throughout the State of Ohio as fair.  In practice, it is obviously not fair to all voters, and fails to consider the size and population diversity of the counties in which voters live.  Access to the ballot box demands that decisions be based on those differences, and fairness to voters is the first consideration.    I will continue to oppose any attempts to deny any Ohioan, any American, the fundamental right to cast their ballots in every election, regardless of where they live, or the hours they work or study.”
