Congresswoman Fudge's Statement on Senate Republicans Blocking Renewal of Unemployment Insurance January 14, 2014
Washington, DC- Congresswoman Marcia L. Fudge (OH-11) released the following statement after Senate Republicans blocked the opportunity to extend federal unemployment insurance twice today: “Every day the Senate does not move to extend federal unemployment benefits hurts those who struggle to keep afloat while searching for work. It is extremely disappointing that political considerations continue to trump the needs of jobless Ohioans in this faltering economy,” said Congresswoman Fudge. Extending the unemployment insurance program would increase economic activity, and failing to do so could cost the U.S. economy 240,000 jobs this year. According to the Department of Labor, 39,000 Ohioans lost an average weekly benefit of $312 in the first week since unemployment insurance benefits expired, which has resulted in a statewide economic impact of $12 million. Furthermore, approximately 1,877 more Ohioans will exhaust their state benefits each week federal unemployment insurance is not extended. “The clock is ticking for those workers who look to unemployment insurance as a means to try to feed their families, keep a roof over their heads and pay their bills while looking for a job,” said Congresswoman Fudge. “Bipartisan action in both chambers is the only real solution. No one in Congress should ignore opportunities to stimulate the country’s economy while helping American families. The American people need action now.” ### |
