WASHINGTON, DC – Congresswoman Marcia L. Fudge (OH-11) issued the following statement regarding the observance of Yom Kippur  which begins at sundown tonight:

“For the Jewish community in Ohio, the United States, and around the world, the Jewish New Year has begun.  The  week long High Holidays began with Rosh Hashanah last Friday, continued with  the Days of Awe, and will conclude with the observance of Yom Kippur, a day of deep personal introspection and repentance beginning at sundown this evening. 

“This is a time for families, communities and even nations to come together and rededicate themselves to overcoming differences and building a better future. Let us reaffirm a commitment to the core values shared by all faiths: a resolve to be kind and treat others with respect, civility and generosity.  In a time of economic hardship for so many in our community, it is important that we all work to make the New Year better for those who are struggling. 

“We are also mindful the people of Israel, America’s staunchest ally in the Middle East, yearn for peace and stability in a region filled with turmoil and violence. I wish my Jewish constituents and the Jewish community throughout the world an easy fast and a meaningful Yom Kippur.”
