WASHINGTON, D.C. – Congresswoman Marcia L. Fudge (OH-11) issued the following statement today in reaction to published reports of a plan by House Republican Leadership to introduce a nutrition bill with $40 billion in cuts to food aid programs including SNAP, double the amount of cuts in the House farm bill that failed to pass in June:

“Taking $20 billion in food aid away from hungry Americans apparently wasn’t enough.  House Republicans will now reportedly seek $40 billion in cuts to SNAP (food stamps) and other nutrition programs.  The goal seems to be to win a few more votes to pass a farm bill even if it means cutting a lifeline of food aid to millions of hungry and struggling Americans,” said Congresswoman Fudge.

“This mean-spirited plan to slash nutrition programs is not the way forward.  Instead, it’s a blueprint to more suffering for vulnerable Americans that has little chance of securing significant bipartisan support in the House or the Senate.  Farming and feeding go hand in hand.   I urge my colleagues to work for a bill that truly meets the needs of all people in our nation, and does not abandon seniors, children, working families, the disabled, and the poor.”
