CONGRESSWOMAN FUDGE STATEMENT ON RESCUE OF MISSING CLEVELAND WOMEN
May 7, 2013

I join with the Cleveland community in giving thanks that Gina DeJesus, Amanda Berry and Michelle Knight are alive and have at long last been reunited with their families. Let us support them with full compassion and sensitivity.  As details of the women's captivity emerge, I also share with the people I serve a profound sadness that the ordeal these young women endured occurred in our midst. I appreciate the assistance of the Federal Bureau of Investigation in the ongoing criminal investigation.

This case reminds us that violence against women still exists in our nation.  That is why I strongly advocated for reauthorization of the Violence Against Women Act and protection of all victims regardless of age, geography, race or social status.

While we rejoice at the safe return of three missing women in our community, let us be mindful that all missing person cases deserve fair and respectful treatment under the law.  There are other Ginas, Amandas and Michelles still missing, and loved ones with hearts aching over their disappearance.
